Community Compassion

Lake Area Free Clinic Involvement

Dr. Ruiz has been a board member of the Lake Area Free Clinic for several years.  The Lake Area Free Clinic is a medical clinic that has a mission to provide high quality medical care for free to those who are uninsured or unable to pay for medical care.  Dr. Ruiz has been instrumental in helping to plan for the addition of a dental clinic.  The Lake Area Free Clinic anticipates that their new dental clinic will open in Summer of 2017.  Recently, our team members and doctors took up a free will donation earmarked for the LAFC/Dental Clinic.  We are excited for the clinic and the many it will serve!

Teresa's Story

On August 14, 2008 Teresa Krier lost her life to pancreatic cancer. She inspired many with her positive attitude and contagious smile while fighting a courageous battle. Her hope and humor gave others strength, even when she had none. Teresa simply loved life. Her experience as a breast cancer survivor taught her that life is fragile, so she squeezed every moment out of it. Her faith was strong, and at the end she was at peace and ready to be called home. Though we miss her deeply, we are moved by the opportunity to help others in the fight against pancreatic cancer through Teresa’s Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer that we established in her memory.

  • Pancreatic Cancer has a 96% mortality rate within five years of diagnosis
  • Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States yet it receives little public attention and few federal dollars for research

Our desire is to honor Teresa and keep her memory alive by inspiring and educating others, increasing awareness and working toward finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Please consider donating to this effort in Teresa’s memory. You can give others hope.

Dementia Friendly Community

On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Sheild Family Dentistry became the first Dementia Friendly business in Waukesha County. The prevalence of dementia is rapidly expanding and Dr. Sheild, Dr. Ruiz and their staff recognize the need for proper training in order to treat all of our patients with the same level of expert care.

We are aware that some of our patients or their family members are personally touched by this life altering condition. Dr. Sheild, Dr. Ruiz and their staff feel that anything we can do to make it easier for all of our patients, their caregivers, and family to make their dental visits and treatment as pleasant and streamlined as possible is very important. A couple of dementia statistics:

  • 1 out of 9 individuals age 65 and over has Alzheimer's disease or related dementia
  • In 2010 there were 8544 individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in Waukesha County

Oconomowoc Rotary

Dr. Ruiz is also a board member of the Oconomowoc Rotary.  The Rotary is an international organization with over 1.2 million members worldwide, with a goal to create positive, lasting change in individual communities and around the world.  In Oconomowoc alone, The Rotary organizes the Independence Day Parade, awards student scholarships for our high school students, and supports our local Boy Scout troops, among other pursuits that benefit our community.
