Check-Ups & Cleanings

Diligent brushing and flossing are crucial for maintaining a healthy, happy smile – but they're not all you need. After all, tricky problems can develop that are difficult for an untrained eye to notice, leading to damage and decay.

That’s why Lakeland Family Dental strongly recommends that patients of all ages attend an in-depth check-up and cleaning at least once every six months, or twice a year. This allows Dr. Eric Ruiz, Dr. Samantha Ruiz, and the rest of our team to learn everything we need to know about your unique smile, recommend treatment options if necessary, and give it a nice, fresh shine here in Oconomowoc, WI.

What to Expect During Your Check-Up

During your evaluation, our team will be as thorough and gentle as possible so that we can create a complete picture of your current oral health. We will closely inspect the surface of each individual tooth, take a look at your soft tissue, conduct an oral cancer screening, inspect your bite and TMJ (temporomandibular joint – the joint where your upper and lower jaws connect), and take any necessary x-rays.

If we do finds signs of problems, we can work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your needs and fits your schedule and budget.

What to Expect During Your Cleaning

Over time, soft and hard deposits of plaque and tartar form on the surface of your teeth and increase your risk of cavities and gum disease, even when your practice diligent homecare. Your regular cleaning allows our team to remove them and protect your smile from the threat of decay and gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss. We can also work with you to improve the oral hygiene techniques you use at home, if there’s room to improve.  Our highly skilled hygienists will utilize ultrasonic technology and traditional hand instruments to gently get your teeth feeling extra clean in no time!

You and your loved ones deserve true excellence when it comes to oral healthcare, and here at Lakeland Family Dental, we’d enjoy nothing more than getting to exceed your expectations.

Contact our Oconomowoc dental office today if you have any questions or you’re ready to schedule your first appointment. We also serve the areas of Watertown, Hartland, Sussex, Pewaukee, Waukesha, Delafield, and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

The short answer - yes!  Modern scientific studies show that electric toothbrushes remove more plaque than manual brushes.  These same studies show that electric toothbrushes are perfectly safe for your teeth and gums.  You are actually less likely to cause gum recession or tooth damage with an electric toothbrush than you are with a manual brush!

Many electric toothbrushes come with a timer to ensure you are brushing for the full 2 minute recommendation.  Electric toothbrushes can be particularly helpful for anyone who has lost or limited hand dexterity, whether due to natural aging or injury.

Adding an electric toothbrush into your oral hygiene routine can be an easy way to improve your oral health!

Many of our patients – particularly our younger patients – are also under the care of an orthodontist. We want to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible and that your teeth are in great shape once your braces come off!

Wearing braces needn’t be a cumbersome process – we work closely with your orthodontist to make your orthodontic experience a success.

Just like your teeth, braces and other appliances can build up plaque and tartar. This contributes to dirty-looking braces, bad breath, and damage to your dental enamel. It's unfortunate to see a patient go through the time and effort of wearing braces to have straight, beautiful teeth only to have them marred by damage caused by plaque and tartar build-up.

We recommend twice daily brushing, daily flossing, and a mouthwash rinse to keep your mouth fresh and clean. We also suggest oral hygiene visits every three months (rather than every six months) to ensure that your teeth and gums remain sparkling clean and free from dangerous bacteria. Additionally, we recommend a prescription fluoride tooth gel and use of a rotary toothbrush.

Also, make sure to wear your retainer after treatment to avoid undoing all your hard work!
